My gut feeling is to try and stop what I'm doing, take a leave of absence from work and go to the gulf coast to pitch in to help with the oil spill cleanup and prevention effort. I hate just watching the news reports as the oil continues to gush unchecked. The best advice, though is not to go unless you already live in the area.

Seriously, it would cost me hundreds of dollars to travel, lodge and take care of myself on the road. Ironically, such an effort would burn a lot of fuel and provide very little relief. On the other hand, although it doesn't have the same visceral appeal, I could just donate some money where it would make a difference. I just sent some cash to the National Wildlife Federation to assist them in their response to the gulf oil spill efforts. I am confident that this is a much better use of my resources than making the trip.
